As some of you may know, I’ve been considering writing a book set during the 193os, The Lady of the Vineyard. I’m just in the planning stage now and it might not be some time before I begin actually writing, hence years before it’s published.
Anywho, I had quite the scare this week ….
Once upon a time, a girl named Kellyn Roth was talking with her best friend, Bailey, about her book, The Lady of the Vineyard. As she talked, a slow realization came upon her.
Vineyard.i
Wine.
Prohibition.
Hmm.
For those of you who don’t know, there was one a short-lived out-lawing of all alcohol called the Prohibition.
After Bay had gone home, Kellyn considered changing the time period. But she was extremely attached to the idea of writing this book during the 1930s. And didn’t want to change it.
As you may have guessed, Kellyn was in a panic at this point. Until she remembered one tiny little detail.
Prohibition.
The Eighteenth Amendment.
Hmm.
Amendment. That means that it was probably only in the United States.
Oh, come on! Stop laughing! We all have blonde moments!
Anyway, a quick Google search confirmed my suspicions. Alcohol was never outlawed in England or France. Where my story will be taking place.
The moral of this tale: don’t panic until you’re sure there’s something to panic about.
Have any of you had misconceptions like that in your novels?

How scary! 😉
I remember that!
And how sweet! You mentioned me in your post! And under the term ‘best friend’ too, awwwww! 🙂
That must have been very scary for you! I hate having to change details so it fits the period it is set it.
(We all have blonde moments wether we are or not) 😉
Awwwww Congrats Bayrey! 🙂
Haha, thanks Aurora! 😉
Ya, we all have those blonde moments … sometimes they seem to last a long time, though, lol! 😉
Interesting… The novel I’m writing now is also set in 1930! 🙂 I am writing it set in the United States, but I don’t think there will be any alcohol in it, so I’m okay. 😉

Really? What’s it about (unless you mind sharing)?
I’m writing about my great-grandmother’s teenager years, (I’m starting there, but I’ll be writing more in the future) because she wrote lots and lots of diaries for every day. It’s really interesting and cool to be seeing what it’s like in 1930 in rural New York!

Ah, that must be exciting! I’ve always kinda wanted to write about one of my relatives/ancestors. And that is a very interesting time period and setting! 🙂
Usually when I have to change something to fit the time period, it helps me instead of making it harder to write.
Well, for me it just stresses me out.
What?! THEY DIDN’T HAVE CELL PHONES IN THE 1800s!???? *dies* 😉
