5 Reasons Adulting is Awesome

by Kellyn Roth |
January 26, 2019

Hello y’all! I’m seventeen, and I’m not an adult. I graduated from high school and have some part-time jobs (on and off the internet), but I still live with my folks + don’t have to feed or water or walk myself. So.

I am nowhere near qualified to write on this subject, but you know what? People are always talking about issues they’re unqualified to address, so I’m going to do so, too.

Other than ranting (… or putting together a collected argument; either way …), I’m sharing some puppy pictures! So stay tuned for that even if you don’t want to hear about #Adulting.

ow here’s a note: I know being an adult is harder than being a kid. DUH! It’s supposed to be. What did you expect???

I also know I have an easy special snowflake life. But eh. I’m sick and tired of people whining about “adulting” like literally everyone else in the world isn’t having to do it too!

Grow up, y’all. Literally! ??

Let’s be positive and think of …

5 Reasons Adulting is Awesome

1: You’re your own boss.

I don’t think I need to explain why this is epic! Who wants to do what other people want them to do? Not me!

I’m not even fully an adult, and already I have a lot more control of my time, my money, my decisions, and what I do it with my free time!

For instance, now I’m able to decide to go out with my friends about five minutes before I go … and it’s awesome! I can legit just be like, “Hey, meet me at PetCo in half an hour!”

You can buy food without asking. Who cares what you eat? Well, just you!

You’re accountable to yourself … which means you can choose what you’re accountable about.

You can travel, see new places, meet new people (none of these are my favorite, but maybe you like them).

I could never have done this when I was in high school, and I’m sure I’ll be able to do it more as I get older.

That said, you have to make responsible choices and you’re oftentimes more busy, but the freedom otherwise totally makes up for it!

And being able to go to work, get paid, etc. is a form of freedom, too. Like, really!

“The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” (Revelation 21:7)

2: You’re not so bored.

Okay, sometimes being bored can be good because it’s restful, but at the same time … it stagnates us. And obviously that sucks!

The older you get, the busier you will get. I’m not super busy yet, but I know I’ll get busier as the years go by!

And while that can be a pain, it means you’re really living, you’re actually being a human being, and you’re not a lazy bum*.

“For each will have to bear his own load …” (Galatians 6:5)

Too often people nowadays refuse to take responsibility and believe they’re only truly living if they’re not working.

Excuse me? Our lives are about work as much as play, y’all. ? Maybe more so, especially if the work is honoring to God (which we know anything can be when you’re doing it to His glory!).

*like me most of the time *coughcough*

3: You can truly find out who you are in God!

Whether you were raised in a Christian household or not, your actions and decisions were at least somewhat influenced by your family.

But once you’re on your own, or more responsible for yourself, you can make some decisions of your own in regards to your faith.

They can be positive or negative, sure, but it opens a very important opportunity for you to develop a one-on-one relationship with God away from your family!

And this is important! There are no grandchildren in Heaven, and if you’re just doing what your family does for no real reason, then your faith probably needs some work!

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14-15)

4: It’s a fresh start.

You can change any time, but I’m always looking for an extra excuse to begin again, whether it be the new year, a birthday, a major life change, or something else entirely!

When you become an adult, it’s time to throw behind your childhood and become a grownup!

And yes, this happens slowly over time (unless your parents waaaay overdid the pampering), but now is a time when you are forced to grow up … which is INCREDIBLE because you MUST!

“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” (1 Corinthians 13:11)

5: It’s inevitable. Get used to it.

Look, I’m a big believer in reality … and in reality, you’re going to grow up. (Sorry, Neverland, but you truly are a fantasy!)

I’m not saying, “Welcome to adulthood; check your childlike spirit at the gate.” Nope, you should always keep that with you at all times! And don’t ever be too serious! That’s bad for you. ?

However, everyone has to grow up and take responsibility! In fact, I think that teens should take 110% more responsibility than they do now, though that’s another issue. (#DoHardThings)

But we as humans don’t want to take responsibility. We haven’t since the beginning of time:

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:13)

But you know what? We must! Our life is our own (and God’s), and it’s not ANYONE’s job but your own to take control of it and be a functioning person!

#Adulting is something I want to see used positively more often, not negatively! After all, growing up IS a positive thing!

God created us to grow up. He made us to glorify Him, and if we’re stuck whining about being adults, something exciting and GOOD, how can we do that?

So glorify God in your adulthood, and stop looking back at your childhood as anything but memories. You’re not going to go back … only go forward!

And forward is good. To quote God,

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Also, half of those are NKJV and half are ESV. So. ?

But yep, that’s about all I have to say on the subject! And yeah, I get that life is hard, but everyone’s life is pretty hard in one way or another.

We’re none of us special snowflakes, free from sin and temptation and tragedy! Everyone has their struggles.

TTFN!

  1. What a fun post! Love your positive attitude on this topic. 🙂

That said, as an adult, point one can often be a negative for me! I can’t choose how to spend my time a lot of the time now that I have children, I can’t meet my friends without tons of planning long in advance, and, when I DO choose how to spend my time, I’m more inclined to waste it. I’m not great at being accountable to me! Sometimes I WANT someone to tell me what to do!

But that’s okay. Learning to be accountable, responsible, and decisive are important even if they aren’t fun. And learning to choose to lay down your life to serve others is vital.

Also, it doesn’t seem I was bored much as a child!

Isn’t it interesting how children spend their years in the “can’t wait to grow up” phase and adults seem to spend theirs in the “oh to be a kid again” phase? I think God created both desires (children want to grow up because childhood is designed to prepare for adulthood, and adults need empathy for children as well as wisdom to guide them rightly and appreciation for that stage of life), but I think adults especially tend to take that much too far. I loved all the Scriptures you shared on each point!

    1. It is interesting! Humans are certainly a messed up bunch … thank goodness for Jesus, or I’d be lost. 😛

I think for sure too many adults (well, more like young adults who are just now starting to take on adult things) complain about what everyone has to go through as if it is special to them and feel that, well, they shouldn’t have to grow up (not you … but me, haha! And others, I’m sure!). And that does disappoint me – in myself as well as others – because it’s supposed to be good – because it’s natural. It’s gonna happen!

  2. CAN I PLEASE HAVE IRIS. PLEASE? Because her eyes. ? All the puppies are the cutest. Too bad you live so far away from me. Puppies don’t do so well in the mail, do they?

    1. Nah, ‘fraid I can’t mail, them, otherwise I would! I’d love to know that they were all going to good homes … if you were here, though … 😉 But oh well!

  3. I can’t wait to be old enough to be considered a young adult ? I’m seeing my two older siblings doing it, and it looks awesome.

    And those puppies are adorable!

  4. Ahhh, Paris is so pretty!
And YUS – great post. I get so tired of not only hearing adults, but teens as well, whine about how hard their life is (“its so hard to be a teen” is one saying that really, really gets on my nerves). Everyone’s lives are difficult in different ways, that’s just a part of life. But both need to “grow up”, get a backbone, and quit whining.
    *Cough*
    …. 😉

    1. Paris IS gorgeous! And he has the sweetest personality, too. <3 He's one of my favorites.

Yep, totally! Um ... being a teen is usually pretty easy, y'all? Come on. 😛 Esp. in modern day society when our parents take care of everything, lol. 😉

      Totally!

  5. I’m excited to grow up. Not just be an adult but for every year of teenhood coming my way. ? I’m not a huge dog lover but… those puppies are adorable! Great post and I loved your vlog. ??

  6. Great post! Though I’m already an adult, this was still an encouragement to me. 🙂 There are times when I’ve tended to get discouraged over actually having to be an adult and doing adult-ish things, and wish I could just go back and be a kid again… but you’re definitely right! Adulthood is inevitable, and we need to stop looking at the negative side and look for the good in this new season! Being an adult can be challenging, yes, but it’s also an exciting new time in our life, and we really do get to experience more freedom and flexibility in a lot of areas, which is great! 😀

And I’m not a big dog person, but those puppies are adorable! ^_^ I think my favorite, if I had to choose, might be Iris… it’s really neat that she has different colored eyes!

  7. Eeeeeep those puppies are so cuuuuuute!! <3 I can't even choose a favorite xD

Also, I'm even less qualified than you to complain about adults complaining about adulting, but I agree. 😛 I'm pretty sure adulting isn't supposed to be that bad. 😀

    1. Thank you! They are amazing! <3 I want to keep them all ... we've already found a new home for one, and it's only gonna get worse when they actually have to go to those homes. 😛

YES. Like, I'm totally unqualified, buttttt ... yeah.

  8. Great post, Kell! I liked how you used Bible verses to support your argument. I agree; “adulting” is hard, but it’s definitely not the curse some people make it out to be. We’ll spend most of our lives as adults, so we should probably learn how to do it well. ? (Also, you’ve read “Do Hard Things”! I love that book!)
And as for the puppies… EEEEEEEK!!!!! They’re so so cute! And their names are adorable! (Which of you recently read “The Iliad”? XD) My favorite is Iris; she’s so precious, and her eyes are just irresistible!

    1. YES! Exactly. People need to stop acting like it’s a curse, haha. 😛 (Actually, I haven’t, though I’ve read a bunch of articles on it and whatnot!)

YES! They are precious. (And my brothers are studying the Greeks in high school, lol!) And YEP, she is amazing! Her personality is so spunky, too.

  9. Kell, I KNOW I’ve said it before, but your POV is so fresh and wonderful, and I love this take on adulting. Ik we’re really close in age, and I feel like I crossed that threshold of adulting too. XD (Does it have something to do with getting your driver’s license? That’s my theory. :P)

But yes – growing up is NOT something we need to be afraid of. It is a big adjustment, but has its awesome side all the same.

    Thanks for sharing!
