The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen

Believing herself guilty of a crime, Olivia Keene flees her home, eventually stumbling upon a grand estate where an elaborate celebration is in progress. But all is not as joyous as it seems.
Lord Bradley has just learned a terrible secret, which, if exposed, will change his life forever. When he glimpses a figure on the grounds, he fears a spy or thief has overheard his devastating news.

He is stunned to discover the intruder is a scrap of a woman with her throat badly injured. Fearing she will spread his secret, he gives the girl a post and confines her to his estate.
As Olivia and Lord Bradley’s secrets catch up with them, will their hidden pasts ruin their hope of finding love?

Another amazing book by Julie Klassen that kept me up until all hours of the night, The Silent Governess is definitely a page-turner!
This book had many twists and turns. Sometimes it was a little difficult to find your way through the plot-maze, but it was fun making guesses about how it was going to end. 🙂
One of my favorite characters was Lord Bradley. He reminded me a lot of one of my own characters – Colin Farjon – because he’s so … stoic. You know, with hidden depths. 😛
Also, the idea of super smart people appeal to me. And Olivia is super smart. Not unbelievably smart, but really intelligent and well-learned, etc. 🙂 I have a tendency to make all my characters smart to make up for my lack of brains.

Would I read it again?

Totally!

Who would you recommend this book to?

Anyone who likes historical fiction, especially the Regency era, anyone who likes romance, anyone who likes mystery, and any book-lovers in general. As far as age range, I’d probably say young adult through adult. 🙂

Overall rating

5/5 stars! 🙂

How can I find more books by the authors?

Here’s a link to Julie Klassen’s website.

    1. 🙂 Be sure to let me know what you think about it if you do! Julie Klassen is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. You know, one of my favorite authors who is not dead ….

  1. Turns out that I did read it (checked it out through my online library) and I really enjoyed it! I’ll definitely be reading more of the books she’s written. 🙂 The POV switches were a little confusing at first, but other than that it flowed really well and was easy to read. Thanks for recommending it to me!
Speaking of books like this, have you read Edenbrooke? It’s a book set in this same time period, and it’s one of two or three books that has actually made me cry. (Happy tears though, for this one.) I really loved that book, as well as its sequel-ish thing. Another book from a similar time period that I really liked was called Becoming Lady Lockwood.
Any other books you have to recommend? 🙂

    1. I have not read Edenbrooke or Becoming Lady Lockwood … I’ll look them up! 🙂
As far as recommendations, anything by Julie Klassen. 🙂 I’ve read quite a few of her books and enjoyed them all. Before I started binge-reading Julie Klassen books, I was reading Gene Stratton Porter. And Maud Hart Lovelace. 😛 All my favorite authors are dead ….

      1. Yes, you should definitely look them up. Especially Edenbrooke.
Ooh, alrighty. I read another one of her books, Lady Maybe. I didn’t like it quite as much as The Silent Governess, but I think that’s mostly due to the fact that don’t like love triangle books very much. But it was good, and I might just have to read some more of her books!
I haven’t read anything by Gene Stratton Porter or Maud Hart Lovelace, but I’m pretty sure we actually have some of their books downstairs… 🙂

        1. I haven’t read Lady Maybe … yet. I read somewhere that it was a little more mature, so I was thinking about waiting a couple years at least before reading it. Don’t want my innocent mind spoiled. 😉
And I would recommend anything by Maud Hart Lovelace or Gene Stratton Porter highly! 🙂 I actually did a ton of reviews about Gene Stratton Porter’s novels a while back. Until people began to wonder if I read anything but her ….

          1. It does allude to some…stuff, but it doesn’t actually go into anything. But yeah, depending on how old you are, you might want to wait for a while.
Hehe, I think I read a couple of those reviews. And I’ve seen some of her books around my house…I just never read any of them. I may have to now, though.

            1. Hmm. I’ll think about it. I don’t know if our lame library has a copy though, anyway ….
Yeah. I hope I’ve kinda improved my book-reviewing skills since then ….

              1. Heh, I know that feeling. On the online library lots of the books are always already checked out…but my school library has at least a decent selection.
Well, your review made me read The Silent Governess, so I’d say you do a great job at reviewing! 🙂

                1. Thank you. 🙂 I kinda want to review every book I read, but then I don’t do it and don’t do it and then it’s time to take it back to the library and I don’t want to bother to get on the website and re-check it out … plus there’s so much other stuff to do (mostly stuff that I don’t need to do, but stuff, still!). 😉

                  1. Hehe, well at least you do some. I should probably do some book reviews, but I never know what to say so it never ends up happening and I just decide to read a different book instead.

                    1. I’ve found your blog posts really interesting. 🙂 I enjoyed reading them and they were informative, too.
I would do that, too, except I’m more self-conscious than you and keep thinking, “Someone who knows what they’re doing is eventually going to call me out on this ….” 😉

                    2. Really? Aww, thanks. 🙂
Heh, the funny thing is that I am really self-conscious most of the time, and I kind of do the same thing. I’ll go, “Oh, let’s write a post about revision–OH WAIT I’VE NEVER REVISED ANY OF MY NOVELS BEFORE IN MY LIFE.” But yeah, I understand what you’re saying.

                    3. Another thing is that I feel like I’m, you know, just copying things from other people’s blog posts. But I’m going to keep trying to post every other day at least. 🙂 My readers (if there are any after they read …) will be ready to commit suicide, but oh well. You can’t please anyone. 😉

                    4. Yes, post lots! I like your posts. I think I’m just trying to post twice a week, but it’s kinda difficult sometimes when I can’t think of anything to post. And yeah, there’s some quote by Abraham Lincoln about not being able to please everyone, but I don’t remember it right now… 🙂

                    5. Hehe, I thought so, it just reminded me of the quote. But it does make a good point whoever says it. Should that have been “whomever”? I can never tell with these things…

                    6. Yeah, I think so too. It sounds kinda better. I have no idea though. I’m not very good at that sort of grammar-y things that no one ever uses much.
