May Character Studies: Hobbies

 In Kell's Blog

Well, it’s time for another Character Study! 🙂 For those of you who don’t know, Character Studies is a monthly character interview hosted by Morgan Dusky at Studies in Characters. You should totally check out her awesome blog! It’s so creative!
So, this time I’m going to be interviewing one of my favorite characters from The Dressmaker’s Secret, Nettie. Nettie is … well, Nettie’s just plain awesome.
Anyway, it’s time to get started! Hopefully it won’t be too boring … despite her loveliness, Nettie’s pretty dull sometimes. XD

You need some time with friends, being social. What do you do and where do you go?
Generally down to the kitchen. I chat with Mrs. Bennett, the cook, or listen to the maids gossiping and giggling. I have been known to skip my half-day, though. There’s so much to be done, and I hate to leave my – I mean, the girls alone.
You want some time alone. Just you and yourself. What do you do?
Read! I don’t want to turn into a bookworm or a bluestocking, but I can’t help myself. I love reading … reading for information and for entertainment.
You’re feeling creative. What do you do?
Embroider! Knitting is my common-sense activity … fancywork is frivolous, but I can be more expressive with it.
What do you do when you don’t want to do anything useful or productive? Your favorite “useless waste of a time”?
Other than embroidery and reading novels? Not much, really. I try to only do things that are significant. I don’t want to waste time … we’ve so little of it.
What do you do when it rains?
Most of my activities keep me indoors, so I do the exact same things I do when it shines, albeit a little less cheerfully. I hate the rain, but I’m used to it.
What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
I love taking long walks in nature, but I rarely get the opportunity to. I often slipped away when we lived in Yorkshire … but London offers less opportunities for walking.
Do you like to read?
Yes! I love to read.
What makes you laugh?
Well, on her better days, Claire has a tendency to be sarcastic and teasing. She makes me laugh when she’s like that, half because I’m so glad she’s perking up a little. And then I laugh at the younger servants – affectionately, of course – for their antics. They can be so silly sometimes. And, well, any number of things amuse me and make me happy enough to laugh!
You’re going to a museum/exhibit of some kind. What is at the museum and who do you go with? Do you enjoy yourself?
I went to the Louvre once about nine years ago. I know it’s not exactly a museum, but that’s where I’d love to go again. I’d take Alice and Ivy with me. They’d like it, and it would be a great learning experience for them.
What’s your favorite kind of cookie?
Cookie? Excuse me?

What do you think of the things Nettie enjoys doing? Do you enjoy any/all of the things Nettie does? How would you answer these questions?

I did those Character Studies questions too! I did them twice for three of my characters, and I may have had to think for a couple of the questions. 😉 But I’m doing it all wrong, because these were the only ones I’ve done, and now I want to do the earlier questions! But that’s not in order. 😛

You just have to pretend you didn’t do these questions, and then do the other ones. 😉

A lot of them were fun. I especially liked the introducing one … the one for March.

Yeah, I’m going to do that one soon. They look like pretty good questions that my characters can answer! 🙂 It’s fairly difficult, though, because they were actually real people.

Your characters? So you’re basing them off real-life people? Writing a biography or some other nonfiction work?

Yup, it’s sort of like a biography, but not really. It’s fiction, because I’m making up half of the stuff. But I’m writing about my great-grandmother when she was a girl. She wrote several diaries, so I know the just of what happened a specific day. But I’m making a story around the general statements she says. 😉

Ah, that sounds really interesting! 🙂 I’ve thought about writing a story about some of my ancestors. I have some pretty interesting ones. 🙂

I bet! I think all ancestors were probably interesting. 😀

Yeah, I think they all were for the most part. 🙂

I should tell you about the pet owl and the Balchen household maids, if you like silly maids!

Silly maids amuse me to a certain point. Though that one, what’s-her-name from The Governess of Highland, absolutely drove me crazy. HOW COULD ANYONE BE THAT STUPID????!!!!!!

What do you think of my thoughts?
