Puppies and Titles

by Kellyn Roth |
June 21, 2016

Today we’re going to talk about puppies and titles. I know, I know. Those SEEM like two totally unrelated topics. Truth is? They are. In other words, this word is full of random stuff, and I hope you enjoy it. 🙂
First, puppies. My dog Gidget, a beautiful Border Collie with 1/4 Australian Shepherd in her (that doesn’t show), had 9 puppies in May, and they’re now a little over 5 weeks old, and ADORABLE! So today I’ll be sharing some photos of my adorable puppies with you. 🙂

Puppieeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!

Aren’t they too adorable for words?

Second, titles. There are some titles that just pull at me, begging me to write a novel! Some of them have been used so many times that I don’t dare use them, some of them are less common or completely unused, but I still don’t use them. Because I don’t have good plot ideas. Or no plot ideas at all.
So, sit back and relax; enjoy my titles ideas and the crazy plots I’ve affixed to them in my head.

Titles

  • California Widow

This is an actual term meaning a woman whose husband went to California (c. 1849) and never sent for her. Which is … sad. But, anyway, it’s an idea I’d love to explore. Believe it or not, I was unable to find a book of this title! Incredible, right? So … I CALL DIBS!

  • Security Schedule

You guys may not grasp the beauty of this title yet. But I do. All right, let me try to explain it to you. Like, you know how some people are ruled by their schedules? And there schedules makes them feel secure? Well … that’s about it. I know, I know … I’m insane … but I still cling to Security Schedule! It could be a great novel (although I don’t technically have a plot … or characters …)!

  • Gauntlet

I admit I have no idea what this word means. *Googles it* Oh, ok. “A stout glove with a long loose wrist.” Great. Gauntlet. 😉

  • Milledgeville

Yeah … I have no idea what this word means, either. I know it’s a town … in Indiana maybe? Or Illinois? I always get those two mixed up. *Googles it* Oh, Georgia! I was … so off. *laughs nervously* *considers geography lessons* Ok, how did I read Gone with the Wind five times and not get that? *bangs head against wall, saying “Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!”* (Points for you if you get the reference!) Anyway … this name just pulls at me. Say it aloud a couple times and you’ll get what I mean. It’s beautiful.
So … a story about people living in Milledgeville, I guess? XD

  • Under Celilo

They built this dam near where I live and covered up this beautiful waterfall. Now, usually I’d be all like, “BUILD THE DAM, CUT DOWN THE TREES, KILL THE BABY SEALS!!!” but in this case I’m sad about Celilo being buried underwater. It was really pretty, and I feel like the Indians (excuse me, Native Americans) were really cheated in this case.
I’m kind of lingering between a historical fiction novel set in the 1800s … or 1700s … or 1900s … and in any time during those decades … and a fantasy-ish story. I don’t know which. I’m kinda leaning towards writing about a little girl in the 1930s. Though I just know she’ll end up just like Scout Finch if I’m not careful …

  • Murders in the Bathroom

Oh, come on. It’s just too perfect.

  • Murders at the Band Concert

Whyever not? Think about it. Bludgeoned with a bugle. Strangled with a saxophone. Killed with a clarinet. Even better than Murders in the Bathroom.

  • Catrina D’Vinci

The story of Leonardo D’Vinci’s mother, somewhat fictionalized. Someone needs to write this book! I’m actually sure someone has, but whatever … I need to write one, too.

  • The Domino Effect

There are thousands of books with this title. I’m not even kidding. So one more won’t hurt, right? I’m not sure if this is a spy novel or a romance. Probably a spy novel. I think a good half of the other Domino Effects are spy novels. XD

  • Risk

This book has actually been somewhat planned. It’s The Story of Two Spies of the Korean War, Blue and Sky. I doubt I’ll actually write this. It’s actually fanfiction of one of my friend’s stories, and I don’t know if she’d let me. But, still, it’s fun to dream. And maybe I’ll use to title for some other book. Although, I must admit, there are 100 pages of books with that title on Goodreads … so maybe not.

  • Virginia Dares

Virginia Dare, the first child born in America. Well, the first who wasn’t an Indian Native American. Technically, we don’t know who the first child in America was … but, well, we know about Virginia Dare, so … moving on.
Virginia Dare was born in what is now Virginia. She was a member of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Uh-huh. That Virginia Dare. Anyway, the title is obviously a play on her name, and though I found thousands of books about Roanoke, I feel like the people need my perspective, too. Because, of course, my idea is the right one.

  • 2B or not 2B

It’s about a hotel! What? I’m not joking! I’m seriously going to write this book. I love the title so much that I’m not even going to look up the title and see whether people have used it or not. You know why? Because it’s mine! All miiiiiiine!!!!

  • Musicality

No plot. Just a cool word. *shrugs*

  • Billington Blood

The Billingtons were a family with a knack for getting in trouble. They almost blew up the Mayflower. One of them was the first man hung for murder in the New World. Oh, boy. At any rate, a novel about a relative of the Billington’s who thinks he/she is jinxed sounds very good.

  • Dark Eminence

This was actually a book I reviewed a while back. And the title was totally wasted on a biography! Come on! It deserves something better! 😀

  • Twister

Last but not least, this title has called me for ages now. But, quite honestly, I can’t think of a plot. Oh, well. Maybe it’s not meant to be.
And … that’s all I can think of for now. What are some titles you’d like to call a book? Why haven’t you? What do you think of this post? If you skipped or skimmed parts, I forgive you. You’re not obligated to read to comment! So comment! 😀

  1. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Those puppies ARE THE CUTEST EVER!!! :O Well, actually, I MIGHT have to say that My sister’s are cuter…SORRY!! But they are just … sorry.. :/ 😉 Those ARE ADORABLE THOUGH!! 😛 :O

      1. Of course! :O 😀 XD 😉 Hehe!!! 😛 Well, we have two litters of pups right now! 😉 Soon to be THREE!!!!! :O OH, and did you name Gidget Gidget because of the ‘The secret life of Pets’ movie!??! XD 😛

    1. Thanks! I quite agree! Their personalities are awesome. It’s fun to watch how they have these different ways of reacting to stuff … like one puppy shies away and another runs forward, etc. 🙂

  2. Kellyn, I hope you won’t be offended by this… But I think you are weird. No, not because of the puppies. The puppies are adorable. But because you have thought up all those book titles. 😛 You’re supposed to write the book first, and THEN think of the title! But I have to say… I like the ‘2B or not 2B’ one. 😀
    CutePolarBear

    1. No offense taken! I’m getting used to be calling weird. It’s actually getting to be somewhat of a compliment. I mean, think about it. All of the greatest geniuses were called insane, right? And insane and weird are … similar-ish, right? So maybe you’re just saying I’m a genius in an offhand way. 😉 (I’m just kidding … sort of.) Anyway, I’m always hearing words or phrases and thinking, “Wow … good title for a book.” XD

      1. Haha, I suppose you could take the comment that way. 😛 I think I have heard a word or phrase and think it would be a good title a few times, but not that much. And I promptly forget them, too. 😀
        CutePolarBear

        1. I’ve had to get in the habit of writing them down. Of course, I procrastinate so much in the actual writing that it’s not really worth having that many titles … 😉

  3. I know just the feeling when you’ve got a title and DISASTER!!! NO PLOT!!
P.S. I’d like to read Dark Eminence (not the biography) if someone wrote a YA book with that title 🙂

  4. Oh gosh Kell!!! The pups r totes adorbs!!!! I can’t wait to meet them in person, er, pup, tomorrow….*jigs for joy* ??????
