In Which Kellyn Rests

by Kellyn Roth |
March 15, 2017

When you read that title, you probably went, “Oh, no! Kellyn’s going on [yet another] hiatus!” You’re probably in a state of near-panic, right? Well, aren’t you? Eesh. I can’t believe it makes no difference to you. But the real question is, Are you really leaving us?

Well, I am and I ain’t.
I will be slowing down and concentrating on things other than blogging for the next several weeks (perhaps even months; I haven’t determined an exact time yet); however, I will be making an effort to post every Monday. Some Mondays I won’t, but I’m going to try to. But Reveries will not be my main focus for this period of time.
Why am I on semi-hiatus? I actually have some pretty good reasons.

  1. I don’t have time. That’s the simple truth of the matter! I’m swamped with books to edit, novels to read, reviews to post, and all manner of other commitments. And that’s not even within the realms of what my mother terms ‘real life.’ I’m falling behind on my Bible-reading, on my instrument-practicing, and on my dog-training.
  2. My posts are losing quality. Never forsake quality for quantity. I simply don’t have time to make my posts worthwhile just now. I dish them out – usually hours late – with no regard to how they look or sound or if what I’m saying is even worthwhile. It shouldn’t be like that. One really good post a week is going to be much better than three moderately good ones.
  3. I need to refresh. I think, every once and a while, every blogger should take a break and let themselves think up new things to post about, etc. I actually have some ideas for blog series and interesting posts now, to be honest, but I want to think them out and plan them and such. I want to come back big.

Those are good reasons, right? But what am I going to be doing while I’m gone?

  1. Getting better. This sickness ends now!
  2. Editing more faithfully.
  3. Writing more faithfully.
  4. Organizing my post ideas.
  5. Outlining/plotting various books.
  6. Practicing my clarinet and guitar.
  7. Reading the Bible and praying.
  8. Training Riley.
  9. Reading a lot.
  10. Reviewing a lot. (Reveries Reviews will still be up and running!)

Au revoir et bonne chance, mi amigos y amigas. Deo pacis vobiscum! (Yes, that was three languages … and yes, I did do that all by myself. That’s why you can understand it. Because I don’t really speak French, Spanish, or Latin.)

  • If you’re a blogger, have you ever gone on a ‘hiatus’? How did it work for you?
  • Even if you don’t blog, do you sometimes feel a need to rest from all your commitments? How do you go about doing that?
  • Is there anything you’re involved in right now that’s overwhelming you? Why? How can you lessen the burden so it’s not so stressful?
  • What do you think of my plans for the next several weeks (or months)?

What do you think of my thoughts?

  1. I sometimes “break” and don’t post for a couple weeks, because I’m out of inspiration. My young blogger self often made the quantity over quality mistake. Insert cringe here, when I didn’t post, I wrote posts titled things like SORRRYYY. Not kidding. My trick, though, is scheduling posts, they’re lifesavers for when you get a lot of inspiration in a short amount of time.

    1. Scheduling posts is really great, although I admit I tend to just write my inspiration in a notebook and then scramble to write all those posts (on the computer) at the last moment! I should really try preparing posts several days ahead, though. I always mean to, but I never actually do! 🙂

  2. Oooh, Kellyn, do I feel you. 🙂 *pats you on the back* Firstly, yess, I got sick last Thursday (right before karate tournament!! Praise God we felt OK enough to compete though) and am still battling mucus/asthma from the cold. -_- But I’m feeling better. If I could give you tips, if you have a cold: a) garlic. No joke. Dice up a clove of garlic, mix it with a little bit of coconut oil, and swallow it. If you can’t use the oil, you can just eat it, but it may cause an upset stomach that way. Drinks lots of water, and if you have essential oils, rub those on your feet and wherever they’re needed!
EDITING/WRITING FAITHFULLY! 😀 YES, you can do it! I’m at the same place- I’m focusing on finishing ‘Seek’. And life has been so, so busy, and crazy, and scary, and hopeful- it’s been hard to find time, ya know? But a small daily goal helps a lot. Reading the Bible and praying, helps me a ton with writing, too. ♥
How is Riley? The past few days have been rough with my Aussie pup, Waylon. It’s almost like I can’t keep everything going at once, and then he acts up, and I feel like I can’t do anything right. Haha. But, luckily my Ma kinda told me it wasn’t me, and I was doing better. ;D So I’ll be working with Waylon, too. 😛
    GOD BLESS!
P.S. ((I’m pretty sure it’d just be ‘mi amigos’, because if you have one boy in a group of girls, you’d switch the gender to male. It’s weird!)

    1. Ooh, sorry! That sounds bad. I hope you get better soon.
I hope Waylon starts to obey soon. With Riley, everything’s actually going pretty well. He’s a very big dog now – he’s bigger than Gidget, and he’s not even full grown! – and he can be kinda hard to control, but he obeys me fairly well. I’m very strict with him (he’s very intimidated by me … maybe terrified is a better word XD ). Anyway, Riley is really smart about learning the basic commands and really dumb about so many other things! But he caught on to leash training and such quickly. But yeah, we do have problems still.
((Thank you! I honestly have no idea how to speak any language but English! Unless you count border collie and cat. 😉 Just kidding! ))

  3. Poor Kellyn 🙁
Also I can feel the struggle. I literally go on a mini-hiatus every three days because school and just life in general is so stressful??? Like and it takes so much time to write and edit and make graphics and then I have other things to do and ugh…. I’m glad though that you’re making time for things that need to be done. Because if you don’t it all piles up and no *shakes head* just no. Overall I’m sad you’re sort of leaving but I’m glad you’re dedicating more time to what needs to be done 🙂

    1. Well, school never really bothers me (*dancing*) so I definitely have an advantage … I would die if I went to public school. Seriously. I wouldn’t be able to do anything but school. Is it really awful to say I kinda feel sorry for publicly schooled kids? Okay, yeah, that is awful … but I can’t help it! I know I would just die. I wouldn’t be able to write or edit or write blog posts or do graphics or take pictures or hang out with my friends or talk to my dogs or read or … any of things I do! I wouldn’t even be able to think about doing those things … it’d just be school. (Okay, maybe I’m over dramatizing this … but that’s what it feels like! I like doing stuff at a pretty slow pace and I just don’t confirm well and … *shivers*)
Thank you! I’m really going to work hard and get all this stuff done and then … I’ll be back. 🙂

      1. Yay I’m excited you’ll be back! And I know this sounds weird but I’ve never been to a public school? Me and May go to a charter school (which means our general school work load is much bigger). Like everyone complains about public schools and I’m just peacefully ignorant of the horrors (also the way you described about dying because you don’t have anytime – that is literally me every day and you’re so lucky you’re homeschooled like??? I want to be homeschooled ?)

        1. Homeschooling is amazing, but I imagine there are probably benefits to charter schooling and such … maybe you’re way smart or something ’cause of all that work. 😀

  4. I’m sad you’ll be gone… yet still here. 😉
I hope that you’ll complete your goals(?) while you’re on a hiatus for a while. 🙂

  5. Great idea! I haven’t had a problem posting too much on my blog; my problem is posting too little… 😛 Schedules definitely help, though. 😉 I hope you have a nice break! 🙂

  6. Nice! I haven’t gone on a hiatus, but when I run out of ideas, I post once/twice a week. Like you are doing. No fixed day though.
You can’t disappear for months! No! I demand you come back right now. Anyways, the plan sounds good, but really come back before it is months! XD.

  7. Actually, I saw this and I went, “Oh good, she took a nap or something,” and then it turned into, “Wait, she’s taking about a hiatus…A HIATUS NO.” But I understand…at least you’re informing people that you’re going to be gone, whereas I just disappear. 😛
*feels a slight need to correct your spanish* You would use “mis” because friends is plural, and then you can just say “mis amigos” without the “amigas” because that’s already included in a group (amigos could be a group of guys, or guys and girls, whereas amigas is just girls). But that was good for not knowing Spanish! 😉
Good luck with your semi-hiatus! I hope you get inspired again! 😀

      1. I’m taking my second year of Spanish in school right now, so I can do really basic stuff…but I also want to continue doing Duolingo (which is an online language learning program) so that I can get better at Spanish…

        1. I’ve done Duolingo, but I quite honestly lost interest after a couple days. XD I’m really bad at self-discipline when I’m not excited about something.

          1. I’m pretty bad at self-disciplining…I do something for a few weeks and then I lose interest. Hence why I’ve stopped doing Duolingo…

  8. Good Job Kellyn, It’s hard to move away from something you love doing to doing stuff you need to do, and need to spend more time doing. Have a nice break Kellyn.

  9. I’ve heard of these hiatuses in the blogging realm before but somehow it has never occurred to me that I could actually do this (yes, me). In fact, reading this post of yours has given me the idea that I should do the same. I think I really do need a break when everything seems to be coming together so last minute and correspondence with friends is suffering for it.
    So Kellyn, thank you!
