The Incredible Adventures of Scruffer & Co. by John Serbin

A self-centered teddy bear becomes real and has to learn how to live in this new reality. He is soon joined by other teddy bears with differing personalities. Together, they embark on a series of comical adventures as only fun loving teddy bears can.
If you enjoy the characters and humor of Calvin and Hobbs, The Far Side, and Peanuts, you will definitely fall in love with this comical company of teddy bears as they experience the world from their unique perspective.

A great collection of short stories about a magically-alive teddy bear and his similarly stuffed buddies. Very cute and humorous.

PLOT: 3/5

Each of the stories was pretty sweet and funny, but I felt like they were all lengthier than they should have been and maybe a little too rambly. The Cookie Bush story was probably my favorite. Just ’cause I want one. Or someone who will make me one, at least. 😉
Each of the stories didn’t really follow a dramatic arc so much as narrate a portion of the bears’ life.

CHARACTERS: 5/5

Best part of the book were the characters! They were all engaging and unique. I especially loved Queenie and, of course, Scruffer himself. John was also a great character. I wish we could have seen more of Cinnamon and Moosie, as they came in later in the story. NB was a sweetheart.

SETTING: 4/5

Considering the fact that the setting didn’t largely play into the story, it was fairly well-done. I was a bit confused by the move in between stories – it felt kind of sudden, and I hadn’t been expecting it.

WRITING: 3/5

There seemed to be quite a lot of “telling” instead of “showing,” and I occasionally found myself confused. However, the author does have an engaging, amusing writing style that I enjoyed.

I quite honestly can’t think of anything! There was maybe a tiny bit of rude humor or something like that, but I can’t remember it. I’d say okay with all ages, though the reading level was more YA/adult. Some words were pretty big for littler folks.

OVERALL: 3.5/5

A great collection of short stories. I do think it would please lovers of Calvin & Hobbs and Peanuts, as the blurb states.

Do you enjoy The Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbs? What are your thoughts on goofy comedy? Teddy bears coming to life? Does this sound like a book you’d enjoy?

What do you think of my thoughts?

  1. Yes, I enjoy Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts. This isn’t a comic strip, though. So I am not convinced that I would love it. It might depend on how the teddy bear came to life. 😉
