Beyond Her Calling, Blog Tour: Day 6

 In Kell's Blog

Welcome to Real Life Day, which is also day 5 (whoosh!) of the Beyond Her Calling blog tour!

I’m going to be talking about the people, places, animals, and other miscellaneous things that inspired me while outlining and writing, helped me finish the book, helped me edit it, etc.

Hang tight, because I have a lot to cover!

Favorite quote:

[N]ot many books are willing to “go there” in a healthy, respectful manner. This book touched on anything from the minor to jarringly dark when it comes to mental health, and it did so with grace and balance.

Good to hear after working so hard on that aspect for so long!

Real Life Day

So, as I said before, I’m going to be talking about all the people who were helpful!

Research I Did

Things I researched include:

  • Scottish accents
  • Different Scottish terms
  • Dairy cattle in Scotland
  • Sheep in Scotland
  • Names for the era and for Scotland in particular
  • Trains, coaches, and other modes of transportation
  • A bit of things-people-would-wear-etc.

Things I Fudged

For the entirety of the first and second drafts, I had no idea what a Scottish accent really was. It was only in the third draft that I got those sorted – and I was still making changes as I proofread!

I wasn’t 100% sure about the timeline for training to become a doctor in this era, so I blurred those lines a bit.

I also wasn’t super specific about the location of Keefmore. 😉

Jordy Is Real!

That’s what Jordy really looks like. 😂

Okay, really, though. I based Jordy off my best friend, Bailey. And … according to her, at least, I got it creepily right. So much so that she demands I remove the “this is a work of fiction” disclaimer at the beginning.

Bailey is an ESFP. She hates spiders and loves good food. She has pretty much identical feelings on romance. Jordy drives her absolutely crazy.

So yes, that was a fun little something I wanted to bring up. 🤣

Remember …

The Reluctant Disciple and Blood Moon Redemption are going on tour!

p.s.

How does real life seep into your novels? Do you base your characters off friends and family? And does it drive them crazy sometimes? 😝

I think it’s great that you based Jordy off Bailey. XD (Everyone needs to be driven crazy sometimes, right?) I probably have based every character I’ve written on a real person. However, 99% of the time I don’t know that person in real life. (Sometimes they’re dead, and sometimes they’re “famous”–it depends on the book XD)

Haha, yeah, with your books, that makes sense! 😛 And getting the personalities of real people right would be harddd … especially since you don’t need them!
