Five Fall Favorites – Day 5 (Rereads)

It’s time for Day 5 of Five Fall Favorites (hosted by Once Upon an Ordinary and Read Another Page)!

As I mentioned, I do a lot of rereading these days, so this was an easy day for me.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite ..

Rereads

The Bird in the Tree by Elizabeth Goudge

This book is one I keep returning to (along with the rest in this series). This book was important then, but it’s even more important now. The themes are amazing! You do have to weed through a lot of description and Goudge’s typical musings, which sometimes go on forever. She’s known for being … uh, wordy. And thoughtful, sometimes to her detriment.

A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter

This is another book that, in hindsight, has some weird moments. Like, I love Elnora, but Philip is NOT all that, and Edith actually has a point. (This is what we call … an emotional affair. THAT HE TRIED TO MAKE PHYSICAL. Like, Elnora, I know you’ve never met an attractive man before, but …?) That said, I still do love this book, and it makes me so happy.

Also, I made a meme:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

I know, I know. I just rambled a few days ago about this book having some … less than perfect moments. But that’s part of what I love about it! Also, Jane is one of the best female characters in literature, and she delights me and inspires me time and time again.

Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards

Why aren’t more people talking about this book??? It’s a gem, and it never fails to make me tear up when I read it. Like, Mandy is such a sweetheart, and her desire to create a home, a place of beauty, is so beautiful. Her wanting a family but being unable to claim one for herself also makes me so sad! But the ending is perfect.

Also, Julie Andrews Edwards is a queen.

Blue Skies Tomorrow by Sarah Sundin

The only “modern” book on this particular list, this one has a special place in my heart. I’m not sure if it’s because of Ray and Helen, or the lovely themes, or because of the sensitive and nuanced approach to an abusive marriage (in a character’s past, not present), but it stands out to me as one of the best!
